Fighting the traffic over the New Year holiday period is not something Sam Bewley needed to worry about.

The rising star of Kiwi cycling spent his New Year at Ohope Beach in the Bay of Plenty and then biked roughly 100km back home to Rotorua yesterday.

For a man about to embark on a pretty high-powered 2010, that will be one of the few easy rides he’ll enjoy this year.

Bewley, 22, will ride this year for American professional team Radioshack, which was set up by cycling legend Lance Armstrong. The seven-time Tour de France winner is in the second year of his comeback and after playing second fiddle to Alberto Contador in the Astana team last year, Armstrong’s ambitions are to win another Tour de France title.

Bewley won’t be part of that challenge, but he’ll ride plenty of races for Radioshack as New Zealand’s presence in European professional cycling continues to grow. It’s possible this year…
