Roe goes all out for team

LOCAL boy Tim Roe set himself some tough goals going into his first Tour Down Under and achieved them on day one.

The 20-year-old from Glenelg initiated a breakaway at about the 23km mark of Tuesday’s first stage from Clare to Tanunda and, with two other riders, at one stage had a lead of nearly 10 minutes over the main peloton.

He was caught by the peloton as he’d expected, about 15km from the finish line.

By then, Roe had won the first King of the Mountain contest on Menglers Hill claiming 16 points and the right to wear the King of the Mountain jersey in Stage Two.

He had also finished third in two intermediate sprints at Riverton and Kapunda, picking up a one-second time bonus and two sprint points each time and also, along with his effort at Menglers Hill, earning the stage’s Most Aggressive Rider title…
