USA Cycling announces Phinney-led Track team for Worlds

USA Cycling has announced the eight-person U.S. roster for the upcoming UCI Track World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.

As the defending world champion in the individual pursuit, 19-year-old Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colo./Trek-Livestrong) earned an automatic nomination to the men’s squad. The 2009 world championships in Poland saw Phinney become the first American male to win an elite world title on the track in 13 years. In addition to defending his pursuit title, he will also contest the Omnium event in Copenhagen.

Rounding out the men’s squad will be discretionary nominees…

Welcome to the Trek-LIVESTRONG pro-continental cycling team, designed specifically for Under-23 riders. Created by Lance Armstrong as a project to develop the next generation of elite cyclists in 2009, the team continues to feature up-and coming-talent from around the world, including junior world record holder Dale Parker (AUS) and national champions Nathan Brown (USA) and Michael Vink (NZL). Under the leadership of ten-time Tour de France veteran Axel Merckx, son of the great Belgian Eddie Merckx, the team has developed nine riders to the WorldTour level to date including five-time world champion Taylor Phinney, former American champion Ben King and British national time trial champion Alex Dowsett. In an effort to support the team founder, Trek-LIVESTRONG will proudly ride under the LIVESTRONG banner, joining the Lance Armstrong Foundation in their global fight against cancer.
