ABOUT JUSTIN…
How did you get started in bicycle racing?
My Dad was one of the big names in Belize, where my family is from. So naturally, as kid wanting to be like his Father, I’ve always wanted to ride but he would never pay me any attention. He always said I was all talk haha. Plus, I was doing so many other things, such as Football, Basketball, Track and field. Being an inner city kid, that’s what I was into and great at. When I was 12, I fell out of a tree and landed on my spine and when I went to the Doctors he said I’d have back problems my whole life and that I should stay away from contact sports. My Mom, being my Mom, didn’t let me play sports after that. When I was about fourteen and a half we had a pretty rainy off season and my Dad would leave his bike on there trainer I jump on one day and did 45 minutes with no shoes no bibs, Basketball shorts and Nike’s and I just road after a week of that he decided that it was time to get me some shoes.
Tell us about your first race.
We have a training crit in Long beach were the fastest Juniors in my age group at the time in Ca. went to, Alex Garcia who was the 13-14 national crit Champion and anther kid named Nico who was State Champion in my age group and I always beat them in sprints on the group ride so I though it was gonna be a breeze I got smashed that whole season haha they were teammates.
What is your favorite memory or experience on the bike?
My favorite memory on a bike was Winning my Crit National Championship in ‘08 everything was perfect it was in my home town, My hole family was out, I had the support of my team and one of the best crit racers (Rahssan Bahati) in my ear to guide me home.
That day was the day I’ve been waiting on since I started Cycling.
What makes you most excited about riding for the Trek LIVESTRONG team?
I’m excited about the opportunity to work with the great guys on the team. I really feel like this season will be full of excitement and winning on and team with great support and a great staff.
What is your favorite place to ride?
I enjoy riding the most on the California Coast at dusk. It’s unbelievable. It’s home.
What accomplishment or career achievement are you most proud of?
The things that I’m most proud of are hearing people start talking when I show up to races, Winning Sea Otter even though People say I can’t climb, making everyone proud that believed in me and shutting everyone up that had something to say.
